Its generally... very advisable... to stay out of 0.0 as a newbie.
Especially... SYNDICATE, the most lawless region in the game and by far the most dangerous.
Especially A CHOKEPOINT SYSTEM IN SYNDICATE?!??!?!

Originally by: Hans Meuler I think you guys might have forgotten what its like to be new. You have maybe 10k in your pocket and everything you had you spent on your first ship. It sucks wasting 3 days of work on your first ship only to have it ganked 20 minutes later. I guess in the end I did learn a lesson but I still think its crazy that the mission agent sent me there on my 2nd mission. You guys might know better but I didnt. How was I supposed to know, I'm barely out of the tutorial.
You should know because of:
1) The player guide that you should have read. 2) The big blob on the map of "kills in the past hour." 3) The warning when you gated in that said that you're going to get ganked because its dangerous. 4) The warning on the mission that said its dangerous.
Hopefully you saw at least one of those. - Proud member of the [23].

I doubt there is a single vet out there who didn't go out into 0.0 within their first month.
If so, I pity them. - Proud member of the [23].

DS,
I lost a Caracal last week, and it meant a lot to me because it was my first outing with several T2 mods. Will you replace it for me?

OK, I honestly hear what you're saying. Looking at the game through design I think there's a deffinite need to improve upon the first missions which guide a player into those hostile terretories rather then having them thrust into it ala' "sink-or-swim". Improving missions in this area would vastly increase the return players who've tried EVE.
I began playing this game yesterday. I played from 6:30pm till 11:30pm in a single session while doing the tutorial. Yes, there are obvious holes that need to be fixed which would yield a greater gaming experiance for us _new_ players.
Upon finishing the tutorial I never recieved anything mentioned such as a large amount of ISK nor any bionics (?). I'm not sure if I were even supposed too. The tutorial finished off with updating all the icons and implied to conitnue working for the single contact I met via the tut. Well...the second mission was directing me through dangerous regions and as a new player who's soaking up as much info as possible this is an obvious oversight on the DEVs part and is a little early of an experiance for noobs. *note: I enjoyed it none the less.
I think I have around 60k-70k ISK and recently purchased a ship that I don't even know the name of other then it has 2 weapon slots, 1 medium and 3 lower slots and is shaped like a CylonRaider. YEs, I can fly it and yes it's out fitted with noob weapons...until I get home. hehe
The new charcter tutorial needs to be more geared towards the "new" player who knows nothing about this game and wants to "play" rather then "learn" the gui. A two multi part tutorial with greater emphasis placed upon zones and combat is needed while providing for a gradually increasing difficult setting which intorduces players to actualy loss.
Players should not have an existing knowledge base inorder to navigate missions that are obtained out of the gate. Yes, knowledge is good although as a dev and a player one can't ignore that as a noob you should be guided through the experiance with little gating. *as has done although there's a need to have more emphasis on less jumps in missions which will keep a player closer to the safe zones until they are more "knowledgable" of the risks.
You know, i've passed this game up so many times in the past because the features didn't sound good and the screenshots didn't do it justice. YEs, the game is beautiful. It's the mechanics and pathing which grasp a player and causes them to become engrossed with the environment and experiance of any game. Think how great "Mario Brothers" was with it's graphics. What about the old arcade game "Spacewars"? EVE posseses the same traits that caused those games to become icons although the "pathing" still needs some work.
Gating is bad. I like the openess of EVE and it's one of the attractions I have....that and the scalable dynamics. :)
I am hooked!!
Perhaps you should read the player guide.
There is no excuse for not understanding the basics of EVE when there's a 140 page player guide complete with flash explanations of some basic concepts linked from the main page. - Proud member of the [23].

Really, I skipped the players guide and tutorial, and it wasn't too hard to pick up.
Well that's the other end of the spectrum
I've known people that learned the entire game without any guide or tutorial or help from anyone, and people who needed every last bit.
For example, when I started EVE, the tutorial was 10 minutes long and covered mining, shooting, refining ore, and buying using the market. There was no player guide--that came out 2 months later. I didn't use Help chat either. But somehow I managed to learn... - Proud member of the [23].
